Not only is it not pointed to, but a wholly different comfort is administered. Then said I, woe is me" ( Isaiah 6:1 , Isaiah 6:5 ). Even as was the right of circumcision a special covenant between God and Israel, but not something that was required of the Gentiles. Probably Paul has an eye to those of the circumcision, who preached up the ceremonial law; these he calls grievous wolves, for though they came in sheep's clothing, nay, in shepherds' clothing, they made mischief in the congregations of Christians, sowed discord among them, drew away many from the pure gospel of Christ, and did all they could to blemish and defame those that adhered to it; not sparing the most valuable members of the flock, stirring up those whom they could influence to bite and devour them (Galatians 5:15); therefore they are called dogs (Philippians 3:2), as here wolves. There is need of pastors, not only to gather the church of God by bringing in of those that are without, but to feed it by building up those that are within. Get the word out. People write and say, "Can we duplicate your tapes?" And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. Where are the men now who stand in the same position before God and the assembly as Paul and Barnabas? The word cannot at the same time include both, though it may in certain cases, according to the context, mean either. In fact they thought that Christians would be all the better for being good Jews. We shall find, before we have done with the history, what the character of this action was, and wherefore hands were laid upon them: the end of Acts 14:1-28 explains it to us. Here take note of another remarkable fact. Watch that one who is constantly emphasizing what you ought to be giving to God. The law might thunder its claims on a particular people; but the truth deals with everybody as he is before God. For edification see on build up. Watch thou in all things (2 Timothy 4:5), watch against every thing that will be hurtful to the flock, and watch to every thing that will be advantageous to it; improve every opportunity of doing it a kindness. But grace never acts in power without stirring up the enemy, and in ways calculated most to oppose and undermine. 2. All this happened at night. Paul, like a faithful watchman, had warned them, and, by the warnings he gave men of the danger of their continuing in their Judaism and heathenism, he prevailed with them to embrace Christianity. John's baptism was only transitional. Hence, the Holy Ghost comes into a very decided and defined prominence here: "Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them." We're here to give rather than to receive. They had faith, they looked to His person; but they had not intelligently laid hold of His work for the peace of their souls. And then I can see the circle of men kneeling as they join hands in prayer, not knowing what the future holds. These befel him by the lying in wait of the Jews, who still were plotting some mischief or other against him. He appeals to them concerning both his life and doctrine, all the time he had been in and about Ephesus (Acts 20:18; Acts 20:18): "You know after what manner I have been with you, and how I have done the work of an apostle among you." It seems that maybe he did get to see them again. But it is important to affirm that none understand the action of the Spirit who expose themselves and the truth (which is still more serious) to the deserved stigma of denying the real abiding-place of ministry. [2.] You must either have apostles, or at the very least apostolic men such as Timothy and Titus; for it is quite evident that merely to call people elders does not make them such. Thus he puts the sage down with the savage, because God is brought in as the judge of all. Such a charge is altogether distinct from ministry: it is only confusion to suppose that they are the same thing, or inseparable. Such, then, was the object and meaning of the hands laid on Barnabas and Saul. "I'm free from the blood of all men because I haven't shunned to tell you everything, the whole counsel of God.". He not only preached that which was profitable, but he preached every thing that he thought might be profitable, and kept back nothing, though the preaching of it might either cost him more pains or be disobliging to some and expose him to their ill-will. When the question came before them, "there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed." Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. God, in His grace, gives what is needed, a means of salvation. Repentance towards God; that those who by sin had gone away from God, and were going further and further from him into a state of endless separation from him, should by true repentance look towards God, turn towards him, move towards him, and hasten to him. Since Miletus was only about fifty kilometres from Ephesus, Paul took the opportunity to call the elders of the Ephesian church to come and meet him. "And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men." He was a powerful preacher, which is intimated in his testifying to them; he preached as one upon oath, that was himself fully assured of the truth of what he preached and was desirous to convince them of it and to influence and govern them by it. It marked as nothing else could the family spirit of the Church. The masters were troubled because the source of their gains was gone; and the magistrates disliked anything that produced an uproar. Christ was all to them. Let them consider the danger that the flock was in of being made a prey to its adversaries, Acts 20:29; Acts 20:30. (4.) ", The allusion to the resurrection became at once the signal for unseemly jest. Never, never, never. (. That it's a lack of faith or commitment that anybody would suffer. And His glory filled the temple. The Holy Ghost also directed those that chose, and called, and ordained, them to this work in answer to prayer. These two things are clearly recognized by the Holy Ghost. . In answer to all these perplexities, Paul directs them to look up to God with an eye of faith, and beseeches God to look down on them with an eye of favour. Sure it is, a whole different philosophy. Sin must by repentance be abandoned and forsaken, and then Christ must by faith be relied on for the pardon of sin. This is the serious evil that now begins to show itself. As he had served the Lord, so he had served them, with many tears,Acts 20:19; Acts 20:19. The soul of man, which was formerly the habitation of God, is now in a state of ruin. The apostle takes particular pains to show his respect and love for Barnabas after this in an inspired epistle (1 Corinthians 9:1-27); and what is yet more to the purpose, he makes the most honourable mention of Mark in more than one of his later epistles. Read full chapter. But, singular to say, Paul circumcises him. Accordingly the source of this trouble lay not among unbelieving Jews, but among such as professed the name of the Lord Jesus. And God brought life, because you can, you know, if you take a person who's been dead as long as that kid had been dead, there's no way any resuscitation is gonna bring him back. That message can help you grow and can give you the inheritance that is shared by all of God's holy people. No man can have a true encounter with God and still maintain a prideful position. The impression is that of a family meeting together rather than of a modern church service. Peter used the Hebrew Scriptures to attest to the truth that Jesus is God's Messiah and cited His glorious Resurrection as . Notwithstanding, I do not doubt that this is often done with comparatively good let us conceive the best intentions on the part of many, but with very great rashness and inattention to the word of God. But here take note of another part of their service the confirmation of the souls of those who had already believed. You notice how when we go on tour to Israel together, how much closer we seem to get to one another. You will hear them declare that worshipping on Sunday did not begin until Constantine and he was the one who introduced Sunday worship to the church. And when there had been much disputing," etc. It is, no doubt, subordinate to the glory of the Lord Jesus, but, nevertheless, as a divine person must who does not abnegate His own sovereignty, so it is said "as he will.". And so when he finally got before King Agrippa, I mean, he was really pushing, pushing hard. So, in the Apostle's discourse, the resurrection from the dead is founded not upon the second Psalm, but on a well known passage in the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 55:3), and also in the sixteenth Psalm already referred to. How was it that without the plan of man, and contrary no doubt to the desires of the wisest, the failure of Paul and Barnabas to settle the matter, conciliatory and gracious as they were, only turned to the glory of the Lord? (1.) Secondly, He counts upon the finishing of his course, and speaks of it as sure and near, and that which he had his thoughts continually upon. The meaning of the passage is that Paul is convinced that God is strong to enable him to be faithful to his apostolic calling, in spite of the sufferings which attend it, until the day when he shall be summoned to render his final account. It was Christ that put them into the ministry (1 Timothy 1:12); it is he that carries them on in their ministry, and from him they have strength to do their service and bear up under the hardships of it. The building up of the body of Christ. The philosophies, speculations, and theories of men provide no power at all in this sector. Such too was the state of these men. In Exodus when God gave the Sabbath day law, God said it was a special covenant between Him and Israel. All that a man has will he give for his life; but all that a man has, and life too, will he give who understands himself aright and his own interest, rather than lose the favour of God and hazard eternal life. Those blessings are often represented as an inheritance, or heirship, which God will confer on his adopted children, Matthew 19:29; Matthew 25:34; Mark 10:17; Hebrews 6:12; Revelation 21:7; Ephesians 1:11; Ephesians 5:5; Colossians 1:12; Colossians 3:24; Romans 8:17; Galatians 3:29. Not that one would in the least doubt that Barnabas continued to be blessed of God. (ii) He reminded them of their danger. It was thus according to the grace and wisdom given to these beloved servants of the Lord. He went on in his work in the face of much opposition, many temptations, trials of his patience and courage, such discouragements as perhaps were sometimes temptations to him, as to Jeremiah in a like case to say, I will not speak any more in the name of the Lord,Jeremiah 20:8; Jeremiah 20:9. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: so that the residue of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord who doeth these things known from eternity.". He commends them to the word of Christ's grace, which he spoke to his disciples when he sent them forth, the commission he gave them, with assurance that he would be with them always to the end of the world: "Take hold of that word, and God give you the benefit and comfort of it, and you need no more." III. If Paul had said it, there would have been less to wonder at. When he therefore attempted to turn his old arts against the gospel, and those that were the instruments of bringing it to the island, God asserted His own mighty power. My Prayer.
